It is composed of refractory powder, binder and admixture. Almost all the refractory materials can be made into the powder used to prepare refractory mud. Ordinary cement is made of refractory clinker powder and appropriate amount of plastic clay as binder and plasticizer. It has low strength at room temperature, and high strength only when ceramic bond is formed at high temperature. The chemical bonded refractory mud, which uses hydraulic, pneumatic or thermal binding materials as binder, hardens by a certain chemical reaction before the bonding temperature of ceramics is lower.

The particle size of special fire-resistant mud varies according to the use requirements. Its very limited particle size is generally less than 1mm, and some are less than 0.5mm or finer.

The material of refractory slurry shall be the same as that of refractory products of masonry. In addition to the joint material, the refractory mud can also be used as the protective coating of lining by applying or spraying.
